ISO 9001 is the foundation for practically all management system standards and provides the framework to ensure consistent quality. It focuses on the processes to create the product and/or service and takes a risk-based approach to understand and mitigate any possible issues.

Whether your organization produces a product or provides a service, ISO 9001 is applicable across all industries, of all sizes. It requires organizations to continuously improve systems and processes to maximize efficiency, minimize complaints and increase customer satisfaction. ISO 9001 certification can be the gateway to other markets across industries and increasingly it is becoming a requirement for contracts.

What is ISO 9001?

Improve performance and demonstrate consistent high-quality products and services

ISO 9001 specifies the requirements for establishing a quality management system (QMS) to achieve quality policies and objectives. The international standard defines how you must operate to meet customer and stakeholder requirements.

ISO 9001:2026 revision anticipated changes and transition

ISO 9001:2026 is the next revision of the ISO 9001 QMS standard. This revision is expected to build upon the 2015 version, maintaining the Annex SL-based structure, while incorporating editorial improvements, subtle shifts in emphasis and modern business considerations, such as culture and ethical conduct.

As a global certification body with deep expertise in QMS, SGS offers comprehensive support for your ISO 9001:2026 transition. We can help you with gap assessments, readiness audits, transition training and full certification services once the standard is officially released. We also provide integrated management system support for ISO 14001, ISO 45001 and more.

The new standard is expected to be published in Q3 or Q4 of 2026, with a transition deadline of the expected 3-year period (to late 2029). It's important to start your ISO 9001:2026 transition planning early to avoid disruption and maintain certification.
