Managing the organization’s environmental impact is increasingly important to a range of stakeholders – from investors to customers to consumers. Many organizations now require their suppliers to be certified to ISO 14001, the internationally recognized standard for Environmental Management Systems. ISO 14001 helps to improve an organization’s bottom line by reducing waste, preventing environmental accidents and improving energy efficiency. Certification to ISO 14001 demonstrates leadership’s commitment to reducing the organization’s environmental footprint and protecting the community in which it operates.
ISO 14001 provides the perfect framework under which an organization can include other environmental actions, such as ISO 14068 Carbon Neutrality, ISO 14064 Greenhouse Gas reporting, as well as increasing the organization’s scores on ESG rating platforms like EcoVadis and public scores such as DJSI, MSCI ESG, ISS ESG and Sustainalytics.
The foundation for practically all management system standards, ISO 9001 provides the framework to ensure consistent quality. It focuses on the processes to create the product and/or service and takes a risk-based approach to understand and mitigate any possible issues.
Whether the organization produces a product or provides a service, ISO 9001 is applicable across all industries, of all sizes. It requires organizations to continuously improve systems and processes to maximize efficiency, minimize complaints and increase customer satisfaction. ISO 9001 certification can be gateway to other markets across industries and increasingly it is becoming a requirement for contracts.
At SGS, we consider QHSE (Quality, Health, Safety and Environment) and information security the core standards. Through core standard certification, your organization can demonstrate a commitment to maintaining high standards in operational excellence and risk management.
We can help to ensure compliance with internationally recognized standards such as ISO 9001 for quality management, ISO 45001 for occupational health and safety, ISO 14001 for environmental management, and ISO 27001 for information security. Achieving certification to the core standards enhances trust with stakeholders, improves efficiency and ensures legal and regulatory compliance.
An organization’s most important asset is its people. Preventing accidents and keeping employees safe are imperative for a productive workplace. ISO 45001 for Occupational Health & Safety is the international standard that creates a foundation specifically developed for reducing risk to the workforce.
ISO 45001 makes health and safety a priority for the organization, requiring a demonstrable commitment on the part of management, and involves the active participation of the workforce. It has proven to reduce workplace injuries and help create a culture of safety and employee well-being. Like many of the ISO harmonized standards, ISO 45001 looks at the production processes and the risks involved. It helps put in place ways to mitigate those risks and protect employees, thereby strengthening the organization’s reputation, morale and retention.

A strong information security and data protection program is essential to protecting an organization’s personnel and customers’ information from being accessed by bad actors, inadvertently leaked by staff, or lost through equipment malfunction. ISO/IEC 27001 protects data integrity, confidentiality as well as ensuring availability. Certification provides the foundation for securing information and data, the controls that need to be in place to provide that security as well as the flexibility to add other information security schemes to meet the organization’s specific requirements, including ISO/IEC 27017, the standard for cloud service providers and ISO/IEC 27018, the standard for protecting PII in the cloud environment.
ISO/IEC 27001 is the basis for many other information security standards, including Trusted Information Security Assessment Exchange (TISAX) and Vehicle Cyber Security Audit (VCS) for the automotive industry and the pending Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification (CMMC) for the US Department of Defense.
