Dr. Lisa Drake – Global Business Development Manager
At SGS. Dr. Lisa Drake and colleagues develop new services and coordinate with 40 Affiliates working in >600 ports to help shipowners, port operators, and coastal managers meet compliance requirements and decarbonization goals. Prior to working at SGS, Lisa conducted research on ships’ ballast water and biofouling (collecting samples aboard >100 ships), taught marine science at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, and led an interdisciplinary research group of scientists and engineers at the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory. She has served as a Technical Advisor on multiple delegations to the United Nations International Maritime Organization.
The International Maritime Organization (IMO) is considering new guidance that will significantly impact firefighting foam use across the maritime industry. Under limitst hat are expected to be adopted in the coming months, ships must not carry AFFF containing more than 10 mg/kg of PFOS (10 ppm). It is expected that starting January 1, 2026, the limit will apply to all new ships, with compliance required for existing vessels by their next survey date.
But what does this mean for the maritime industry, ship operators, and environmental professionals? How do you assess AFFF stocks for PFOS, and what are the technical and operational challenges of switching to compliant alternatives?
