We now know that PFAS are damaging to the environment and to human health. They have been classified as contaminants of emerging concern (CECs). PFAS are known as “forever chemicals”, as the C-F bond in PFAS is the strongest known bond in organic chemistry. This means that they persist in the environment. PFAS bioaccumulate within organisms, and many have significant water solubility. There is evidence that they can cause adverse human health effects, including cancer of the liver, pancreas, and thyroid.

What's the problem with PFAS?

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) have been around since the 1940s. Their technical features made them very popular, and they have been used in a wide range of consumer products, including stain resistant fabrics, carpet, and paper treatments, Teflon® coatings, chrome plating and firefighting foams (AFFF).

How can SGS help?

Since the 2000s, SGS has been at the forefront of PFAS sampling and analytical developments, working with industry leaders, consulting companies and regulatory agencies to protect of human health and ecological systems. Drawing on our unparalleled experience, we now offer a one-stop-shop for fast and accurate collection, storage and analysis of PFAS and emerging contaminants samples. We ensure a high level of control over the entire sampling process in order to deliver high quality results.

With a global network of laboratories and strategically located PFAS Centers of Excellence,
we can ensure the accurate and efficient completion of your project.

Method Development

We collaborate with leading technical and regulatory groups to stay up to date with rapidly evolving PFAS collection and analytical methodologies and changing regulations. We can help you meet the latest PFAS requirements and provide you with logistics and analytic support though our network of accredited laboratories.

Sampling

The collection of suspected PFAS-containing samples is challenging, as there is a high risk of cross-contamination from multiple sources. Sampling equipment and materials, such as sample containers, waterproof pens and paper, personal protective equipment, clothing, food packaging and personal care products have all been known to potentially contain PFAS compounds.

We follow in-house and standardized methodologies to prevent the contamination of samples and ensure their integrity during collection, shipment, and storage. We have integrated a very strict quality program to evaluate whether cross-contamination has occurred and ultimately ensure that all samples are equally reliable and consistent.

Analysis

We provide analysis for an extensive list of analytes and on a wide range of matrices, including  water, air, soil, sediments, solids, food, waste, AFF and tissues/biofluids. Our careful control of laboratory background  levels allows us to offer best in class reporting limits for low level work. All our laboratories use ISO 17025 accredited methods.

Our Total Concept PFAS Testing: PFASafe Next Level Analysis further enhances our traditional PFAS testing services This three-level approach combines various analytical techniques for assessing the presence or absence of a very large group of PFAS compounds.
